Madrid was the first stop on my trip to Spain. It is such a lovely city filled with beautiful Plaza’s and parks, a great introduction to the country and culture. I hope that this two day itinerary helps you for your future trips to Madrid!
DAY 1
Plaza Mayor
A beautiful public square in the heart of the city lined with restaurants and shops.
Mercado De San Miguel
A huge covered market. Tapas heaven!
Plaza de la Villa
A historical square that served as one of Madrid’s main medieval centres.
Royal Palace of Madrid and Almudena Cathedral
The Royal Palace of Madrid is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family in the city. With 3,418 rooms, it’s the largest Royal Palace by floor area in Europe! Tours of the palace are available.
Directly across from the palace is the beautiful Almudena Cathedral.
Sabatini Gardens and Campo del Moro
The Sabatini Gardens are at the back of the Royal Palace and Campo Del Moro is a beautiful park to the west of the palace.
Plaza de Espana
Just north of the Royal Palace is the Plaza de Espana, a popular square featuring a monument and two of Madrid’s most prominent skyscrapers
Temple of Debod
An ancient Egyptian temple that was moved from Aswan, Egypt to Madrid. Absolutely gorgeous at sunset! Make sure to check out the hieroglyphics inside.
DAY 2
Puerta del Sol
A public square in Madrid, one of the best known and busiest places in the city. It is the centre of the entire transportation network in Spain!
Plaza de Cibeles
A beautiful square lines with marble statues, fountains, and important buildings.
For a great view of the square, take the lift to the top of Cybele Palace.
Puerta de Alcalá
The impressive Alcalá Gate is the first modern post-Roman triumphal arch built in Europe!
El Retiro Park
My favourite spot in Madrid, this park is one of the largest and most popular in the city and it’s filled with many beautiful features.
Don’t miss the Glass Palace conservatory!
Real Jardin Botanico
Madrid’s lovely botanical garden.
Gran Via
Spend your last night walking Gran Via, a street referred to as the “Spanish Broadway,” one of the most important shopping areas in Madrid.
