5 Cute Towns in Southern Germany

When most people think of Germany, they probably conjure up an image of big cities like Berlin, Frankfurt or Munich. During the planning of our road trip through southern Germany, I made it a priority to stop in picturesque, small towns. I wanted to feel how the locals live outside of the big cities.

When we got home from our trip, I was proud to show my friends and family the beautiful towns in the south German countryside.

Although visiting the big cities in Germany is important, I highly recommend visiting these small towns in southern Germany if you ever have the chance!

Meersburg

I was blown away by how cute Meersburg is. It turned out to be my favourite town that we stopped in on our road trip! Meersburg is situated along the shores of beautiful Lake Constance. The town is known for its medieval city, half-timbered houses, and gorgeous lake views. Meersburg has an Old Castle and a New Castle, as well as vineyards and a winery. I’m not exaggerating when I say that every corner you turn is photo-worthy!

Füssen

The small town of Füssen draws tourists due to its close proximity to the famous Neuschwanstein castle. We stayed in Füssen after visiting Neuschwanstein and it was the perfect place to end our day. I didn’t know much about Füssen and was surprised to see how picturesque it is! There are also some great attractions to visit.

Gengenbach

Gengenbach is a very small town in the Black Forest. Upon entering the old town centre, you will feel like you have stepped into a storybook. The town is filled with half-timbered houses (my weakness!) and fresh flowers at every turn. Don’t miss Gengenbach if you are ever visiting the Black Forest.

Oberammergau

The citizens of Oberammergau have a tradition of painting frescoes of Bavarian themes, fairy tales, and religious scenes on their houses and buildings. This really gives the town a unique and charming feel. I could spend hours wandering around this little town and admiring all of the paintings!

Ettal

Ettal is a very small town just 10 minutes from Oberammergau. Its quietness instantly puts you at ease. Ettal is known for its beautiful abbey and King Ludwig II of Bavaria’s dreamy Linderhof Palace. It’s also a popular ski-resort town in the winter.
