Although I had been to Vienna, I was excited to try Austrian cuisine from a different region of the country on my visit to Salzburg. Salzburg is known for a few special delicacies unique to the city and they are so fun to try! The city is also filled with great cafes and restaurants.
I hope that this post will help you decide what to eat and where to eat if you are ever visiting Salzburg, Austria!
WHAT TO EAT
- Schnitzel – a thin slice of breaded meat. An Austrian staple.
2. Knodel – dumpling. Another Austrian staple.
3. Salzburger Nockerl – souffle dessert unique to Salzburg. This one is from Barenwirt restaurant. Absolutely delicious!
4. Backhendl (fried chicken) from Barenwirt. This restaurant claims to have the best backhendl in Austria. I can confirm that it is absolutely delicious.
5. Bretzel (pretzel) at Original 1. Salzburger Brez’lstand in Kapitelplatz.

Mozart Dinner Concert
A fun option for dinner in Salzburg is to attend one of the city’s famous Mozart dinner concerts.
I was lucky enough to experience a Mozart dinner concert in the Baroque Hall of the St. Peter Stiftskulinarium. St. Peter is part of the famous Benedictine monastery and is located in the oldest part of Salzburg. St. Peter Stiftskulinarium itself is the oldest restaurant in Europe, first mentioned in 803. Even the Mozart family ate dinner here! The beautiful frescoes on the walls and ceiling, the candle-lit chandeliers, and the lovely dinner tables really made you feel like you stepped back in time.
A team of waiters serve you a historical appetizer, main course, and dessert in between wonderful performances of Mozart compositions given by costumed singers and musicians. It was definitely an experience that I will never forget and I highly recommend it!
