After visiting Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles, we stayed in Füssen, Germany. Füssen is a great town to base yourself in before or after visiting the Castles, as it is only a 10 minute drive away. Füssen’s medieval Old Town is beautiful and walkable with various attractions and great restaurants. I hope you enjoy this guide to Füssen, Germany!
WHERE TO STAY
We stayed the night at Hotel Sonne. The hotel and our room were nice – coincidentally, we were given the King Ludwig II room! The breakfast that was included was also great. The only drawback to the hotel is that there is no air-conditioning (typical for hotels in small European towns), so we were uncomfortably hot at night in the summer.
WHERE TO EAT
We had a great lunch at Restaurant Ritterstub’n and a wonderful dinner at Madame Plusch. Some other great restaurants in Füssen are Beim Olivenbauer, Gasthof Krone, Fruhlingsgarten, and Bierstube.
WHAT TO DO
Old Town
Spend some time walking around Füssen’s adorable Old Town.
High Castle
The most popular attraction in Füssen is the Hohes Schloss (High Castle).
St Mang’s Abbey
Located next to the High Castle is St Mang’s Abbey. This Benedictine Abbey was founded in the 9th century by the Prince-Bishops of Augsburg.
Church of the Holy Spirit
The Church of the Holy Spirit is one of the most beautiful buildings in Füssen. The rococo facade is stunning!
Franciscan Monastery of St Stephen
This beautiful Franciscan Monastery was founded in 1628. From here you will have great views of Füssen.
St Sebastian Church and Cemetery
St Sebastian Church has a beautiful cemetery that runs along Füssen’s medieval city walls.
Lechfall
If you have more time, cross the Lech river and walk along the main road to Lechfall (waterfall).
Baumkronenweg Ziegelwies
My favourite attraction in Füssen is the Baumkronenweg Ziegelwies, an amazing walkway above the trees that crosses between Germany and Austria. If you continue walking along the main road, you will find the entrance at the Forest Adventure Center Ziegelwies.
