The adorable towns of Triberg and Gengenach are truly the gems of the Black Forest in Germany. Exploring these two charming towns was my favourite part of our road trip through the Black Forest. Both towns have so much to offer – waterfalls, cuckoo clocks, Black Forest cake and fairytale buildings. I highly recommend stopping in Triberg and Gengenbach if you are exploring the Black Forest area of Germany!
TRIBERG
The town of Triberg is in the heart of the Black Forest. Triberg is known for its beautiful waterfalls, various cuckoo clock shops, and “the original” Black Forest cake!
Triberg Waterfalls
Start your time in Triberg by hiking along the Triberg Waterfalls – one of the highest waterfalls in Germany! We chose to park at the top of the waterfalls and hike our way downhill (the parking lot is called Parkplatz Adelheid Triberger Wasserfälle). You will pass by several different waterfalls and they are all stunning!
Cuckoo Clock Shops
The end of the hiking trail will bring you to the main road in town. Wander around and visit the various cuckoo clock shops. My favourites are House of 1000 Clocks, Kuckucknest, and Oli’s Schnitzstube.
Cafe Schafer
Continue along the main street and stop at Cafe Schafer for a piece of Black Forest cake from the original recipe. Josef Keller created the Black Forest cherry cake in 1915. August Schaefer was Josef’s apprentice and after many years of working together, Josef gave August his recipe book which contained the original recipe for the Black Forest cherry cake. Delicious!
GENGENBACH
Gengenbach is on the western edge of the Black Forest and it is one of the most picturesque towns I have ever seen. I truly felt like I was in a fairytale storybook or Disney movie!
Main Street
Park at Schneckenmatt Parkplatz and enter the Old Town by walking along the Main Street (Hauptstrasse). You will pass under a tower with an archway and instantly see how charming Gengenbach is.
Town Square
Continue along the Main Street and you will reach the Town Square (Marktplatz). I absolutely love this Town Square with its pink town hall, half-timbered buildings, and beautiful flowers everywhere.
Side Streets
The best thing to do in Gengenbach is to explore the adorable side streets. On these small streets you will really feel like you are in a Disney movie!
Picnic Spot
After your time in Gengenbach, head back to the parking lot. You’ll find benches that look out to the River Kinzig. This is a great spot for a picnic or to just sit for a moment before you move onto your next destination!
I hope you enjoyed my guide to Triberg and Gengenbach – the gems of the Black Forest in Germany!
