Niagara-on-the-Lake is my favorite town to visit in Ontario when I need a quick getaway close to home. Whether you are just going for the day or staying in town, there are so many fun things to do in this historical Canadian spot. I hope you have a chance to check these things out!
Wineries
The number one tourist attraction in Niagara-on-the-Lake are the numerous beautiful wineries. Most people partake in a guided winery tour but I have also driven around on my own just to see the inside and walk around each one!

Queen Street
My favourite thing to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake is to simply walk along Queen Street. This picturesque street is filled with flowers, shops, restaurants, and historical buildings.

Butterfly Conservatory
Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Butterfly Conservatory is definitely worth the price. It’s absolutely magical! You could spend hours here, surrounded by butterflies of all shapes and sizes and if you’re lucky, maybe they will land on you! Make sure to also walk around the lovely Botanical Gardens and trails.
Niagara Glen Nature Reserve
The Niagara Glen Nature Reserve has many different wonderful hiking trails. My favourite trail runs along the Niagara River where you can see the Whirlpool Jet Boats go by! The Niagara Glen Nature Centre is where you start your hiking.
Fort George
Fort George played a huge part in Canadian history during the War of 1812. The military post served as the main British Army headquarters to defend Upper Canada against American attacks. You can visit seven meticulously rebuilt buildings from the War of 1812 and the original powder magazine from 1796 (where the gunpowder is stored). Fort George’s fun programs include musket demonstrations and firing, musical demonstrations, historical talks given by the staff and even a Battle of Fort George reenactment in the summer!
Laura Secord Homestead
Visit the home of Canada’s most famous heroine, Laura Secord! You can learn about her inspiring story and step inside her historical home through a guided tour.
Queenston Heights Park
High atop the Niagara Escarpment, Queenston Heights Park is a beautiful spot for a picnic. This park was the site of the Battle of Queenston Heights, the first major battle in the War of 1812 (which the British won). The Battle is commemorated in the park with a 185 foot monument of Major General Sir Isaac Brock and he is buried inside. You can tour the battlefield, visit the small museum and climb the 235 steps to the top of Brock’s Monument.
McFarland House
Built in 1800, the McFarland House is one of the oldest buildings in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It was used as a hospital and headquarters for both the British and the American armies during the War of 1812. There is a tea room in the beautiful conservatory that I recommend checking out!
Ghost Walk
Some consider Niagara-on-the-Lake to be Canada’s most haunted town! Learn all about the famous ghost stories on a fun Ghost Walk at night.

Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours
I have yet to go on a Whirlpool Jet Boat Tour but they look like so much fun! The tours start at the North end of the town near Fort George. If you have been on one, let me know what you think!
I hope you enjoyed this list of things to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake!
